Abstract
Although the concept of ¡®Decent Work¡¯ has globally spread out being applied to studies on labour markets, domestic studies on workers¡¯ mental health have focused only on the simple characteristics related to employment and their relationships with mental health. The purposes of this study are to examine the effect of the quality of employment on depression from comprehensive perspective, and to analyze the mediating effect of perceived economic status. Data of 3,699 paid workers aged 18 or over was derived from the 7th wave of the KOWEPS. Quality of employment was operationalized by using income level, work hour, labour union membership, work place environment, etc. CESD-11 and likert scales were used to measure depression and perceived economic level, respectively. To test the mediating effect of perceived economic level in the relationship between quality of employment and depression, 3-step multiple regression analysis and Sobel Test were used. The results show that, there is a significant negative relationship between quality of employment and depression, and perceived economic status has a partial mediating effect on the relationship, that is, the lower quality of employment, the lower level of perceived income level and the higher level of depression. The findings suggest that the necessity of practical and social security intervention for workers with emotional problems due to poor quality of employment and lower level of perceived economic status are needed.
